The Spring Furnace Cleaning Checklist Every Homeowner Needs

Along with opening windows and decluttering closets to welcome springtime, give your gas furnace attention before shutting it down for the season. A little TLC now can prevent big headaches when the chill comes back around.

Why Spring Is the Perfect Time to Clean Your Furnace

Your furnace just worked hard all winter. Dust and grime have built up inside, and leaving it all sitting there for the next six months is a recipe for reduced efficiency and possible breakdowns. Cleaning it in spring means it’ll be ready when temperatures drop again. You’ll also avoid the autumn rush when HVAC technicians are slammed with service calls.

Start with the Air Filter

If you haven’t replaced the filter since last fall, now’s the time. A clogged filter forces your furnace to work harder than it should, which can drive up energy costs and wear out components faster. Pull the old filter out, check the size printed on the frame, and pop in a fresh one. While you’re at it, note the date on the filter with a marker so you’ll always know when it was last changed.

Clean the Burners, Blower, and Interior Components

Turn off the furnace and cut the gas supply before you touch anything inside the appliance. Once safe, use a soft brush or vacuum attachment to gently clean the burners and the area around them. Dust buildup on burners can cause uneven flames, affecting both efficiency and safety. The blower fan also collects a surprising amount of dust. Wipe its blades gently, and vacuum any debris from the housing.

Inspect and Clear Your Vents and Flue

Make sure all vents are open and unblocked. Furniture, rugs, and curtains have a sneaky way of ending up in front of vents over the winter. Check the exhaust flue pipe as well. Birds and other small creatures sometimes nest in exterior vent openings, so inspect the outside termination cap and clear away any obstructions.

Test Your Carbon Monoxide Detector and Check for Gas Leaks

Spring cleaning your gas furnace is also a good excuse to test your carbon monoxide detector and replace its batteries if needed. If you ever notice a rotten egg smell near your furnace, don’t ignore it. Leave the house and call your gas company immediately.

Schedule a Professional Inspection

DIY cleaning can go a long way, but an annual professional inspection is still worth the investment. A certified HVAC technician can check the heat exchanger for cracks, test the gas pressure, and spot issues that are easy to miss without the right tools.

A clean furnace is a happy furnace. Spend an hour or two on these steps this spring, and you’ll head into next winter with a system that runs more efficiently and safely. If you have concerns or require furnace installation services, contact Coastal Home Services in Morehead City, NC.
