What is the difference between a heat pump and an air conditioner?

Are you interested in remodeling or updating a few things around your house? One of the best ways to improve the value of your home is to update the heating and air to be as efficient as possible.  But, where do you start? How are you going to decide between an air conditioner and a heat pump among other options? Well, here are a few pointers to help answer some of the questions you may have. Once you have decided what system you would like, call Coast Home Services to help set you up with the best unit and maintenance plan to keep your home comfortable for the long haul.

What is a heat pump?

A heat pump is ultimately an air conditioner and a heater all in one.  This system moves hot air around in two different ways; pushing hot air inside (to warm the home) or pushing the hot air outside (to cool the home.) The appeal of a heat pump is that, in just one product, you have the capability to warm your home or cool your home depending on the weather and your desired temperature. With a heat pump, you would not need any other device to contribute to the overall temperature of your home.

What is an air conditioner?

Unlike a heat pump, an air condition can only pump heat one way: outside. The sole purpose of an air condition is to lower the temperature of the home without the capability of heating the home.  Most often an air conditioner is paired with a furnace.   The appeal of an air conditioner would be if your home rarely gets cold, or if you intend on using a furnace in the cooler months. The single purpose of an air conditioner is to cool the home.
