Why does my AC unit make a dripping noise?

Hearing abnormal noises coming from your air conditioning unit can be annoying and make you wonder if something is wrong with your system. One of the most common noises that customers report to our technicians is a dripping sound coming from the AC unit. If you hear a dripping sound coming from your air conditioner, it could be a serious problem that can result in water damage to your home. If you hear a dripping noise you need to contact your local heating and air conditioning service as soon as possible to prevent possible damage to your home.

Are AC units supposed to make dripping sounds?

Some air conditioners make more noise than others. Typically older units create more noise than newer models. Regardless of how old your air conditioning unit is, you should not hear dripping or splashing noises coming from your air conditioner. As your air conditioner works to cool the air in your home, water builds up on evaporator coils and drips into what is known as a drip pan. Dripping occurs when the humidity in your home is higher than normal. If your air conditioner is working properly, the humidity inside of your home should stay low enough that dripping does not occur. If you hear dripping, it likely means that something is wrong. Either the AC unit is having trouble operating properly, or the drip pan drain is clogged. Either way, it is important to have your unit inspected by a trained NATE certified technician that can diagnose and solve the problem.

Why is my AC unit making a splashing noise?

If you hear a splashing noise coming from your air conditioner it likely means that the drain on the drip pan is clogged. This is a common problem that can easily be fixed by a trained HVAC technician. If you can hear dripping or splashing sounds coming from your air conditioning unit, contact your local HVAC service provider. They should be able to diagnose the problem and eliminate the dripping or splashing noise relatively quickly. Allowing you to rest assured that your AC unit is working properly.
